During the
asbestos abatement, the entire HVAC system was modernized by converting
the existing constant volume double duct system to a variable air
volume double duct system. The process required all of the
twenty-two stories to be converted as the building was being abated.
Upon completion of
the shell and core work, we provided tenant design services for most of
the twenty-two stories of office space.

INSTITUTIONAL/EDUCATIONAL:
We have provided design services
for schools ranging from elementary schools to the college level.
Included are three projects for the Los Angeles Southwest Community
College which consists of two new buildings as well as a replacement
chilled water central plant supplying chilled water to Buildings A and
B.
The two new
buildings are a 50,000 square foot physical fitness building with a
gymnasium and a new 85,000 square foot lecture/laboratory building
consisting of classrooms and laboratory classrooms. The
laboratory classrooms contain fume hoods and chemistry gases piped to
the laboratory benches.
We have also
provided design services for four schools for the Arcadia Unified
School District and for four schools for the La Canada Flintridge
Unified School District. The La Canada Unified School District
projects consists of three elementary schools and one high
school. The elementary schools are modernization type projects
while the high school includes a new classroom building and a newly
enclosed gymnasium.
In addition to the
larger projects listed above, we have provided design services for
several small projects for the Los Angeles Community College District.
Some of these
projects are as follows:
Arcadia Unified
School District (four schools)
Bonita Unified
School District (three schools)
La Canada
Flintridge Unified School District (four schools)
Los Angeles
Unified School District (five schools)

Los Angeles Pierce
Community College - Energy Conservation Retrofit Project which includes
the design of air conditioning for eleven buildings, a campus wide
Energy Management System and a lighting retrofit throughout the campus.
East Los Angeles
Community College (swimming pool drainage system)
FEASIBILITY
STUDIES/REPORTS:
Engineering reports are important
to the owner during the decision making process. We have provided
feasibility reports analyzing the economic feasibility of thermal
energy storage systems. One of these feasibility studies was
provided for the City of Beverly Hills Civic Center Complex.
Reports are also
provided for owners on buildings which are under consideration for
purchase. Analysis reports are also provided to owners for a
selection of an HVAC system which may be more expensive on a first cost
basis but is more efficient, and therefore less costly to
operate. The latest (December 1996) report/energy study, an
analysis comparing individual building systems versus a central plant,
was provided for the campus of the Los Angeles Pierce College in
Woodland Hills, California.
We have also provided an
analysis to Greyhound Buslines, Inc. comparing standard air
conditioning systems to a highly energy efficient cooling system for
their proposed new terminal in Phoenix, Arizona. This report
investigates the option of utilizing the low humidity levels in the
Phoenix area to reduce their energy cost associated with comfort
cooling.
All reports
include a table of contents and appendices. For reports providing
information on existing HVAC systems, pictures are provided and the
report discusses the items indicated in the pictures.
Some of these
reports are as follows:
City of Beverly
Hills -
Central Plant Analysis
City of Beverly

Thermal Energy Storage System Analysis
Inland Center Mall

Energy Storage System Analysis
6300 Wilshire
Building -
Centrifugal Chillers versus Absorption Chillers Analysis.
Greyhound Buslines,
Inc - Comfort
Cooling via refrigeration versus indirect/direct evaporative
cooling.

existing HVAC system and an analysis of its capacity
CLEAN ROOMS:
Clean room design provides for
rooms with a highly controlled atmosphere. Usually conditions are
controlled to plus or minus one degree and plus or minus 5% relative
humidity. Clean rooms have been designed for semiconductor
fabrication as well as the pharmaceutical industry.
The Aerospace
Corporation - Building A2 Labs
New Construction
2500 Square Foot
Class 10000 Clean Room
Project consist a
Class 10000 clean room, temperature control to plus or minus one (1)
degree Fahrenheit and 3% relative humidity.

New Construction
500 Square Foot
Class 100 Clean Room
180 Square Foot
Class 1000 Support Area
200 Square Foot
Class 10000 Support Area
Project consists
of clean rooms and support areas, temperature control to plus or minus
2 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity control to plus or minus 2.5 percent
relative humidity.
Other projects
include a 40,000 square foot medical research facility in Taipei,
Taiwan. In addition to standard medical laboratories, this
project included an animal research laboratory. The HVAC design
was quite unusual due to the research of contagious viruses and
bacteria. The project was owned by the National Defense Ministry
Center of Taiwan.
HEALTH CARE FACILITIES:
Design services have been provided
for health care facilities for several projects throughout the Los
Angeles area. The projects listed below represent those
facilities where design services have been provided by Kevin A. Smola
and Associates, Inc. or its employees while at other firms. The
list represents the depth of the experience of Kevin A. Smola and
Associates, Inc. and its employees.
